More Pakistani troops die in Balochistan blast

Dated 11/1/2006

At least two Pakistani soldiers have been killed in a land mine blast in south-western Balochistan province, officials say.

Several other troops were hurt in the explosion in the town of Pir Koh, about 400km (250 miles) east of Quetta.

Senior administration official Abdul Samad Lasi told Reuters the two soldiers died at the scene.

Troops launched a big operation in Balochistan last month after rockets were fired during a presidential visit.

Gas reserves

Military activity has centred on the Kohlu and Dera Bugti area.

Tribal militants in Balochistan are demanding greater control over the province's natural resources.

Balochistan is the source of Pakistan's main gas reserves.
