Kolkotta: Heavy exchange of fire between Indian and Bangladeshi border guards was Wednesday reported from Mekhligunge area along the international border in West Bengal.
Inspector General S.R. Tiwari of India's Border Security Force (BSF) told IANS the skirmish occurred at Kalsipara village, 67 km from Tin Bigha in Cooch Behar district in northern West Bengal.
About 250 rounds were fired by troopers of the BSF and Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) since the evening but there were no casualties, Tiwari said.
The cause for the skirmish could be the setting up of a border outpost by the BSF in an area about 800 km from Kolkata.
Tiwari said a flag meeting between BSF and BDR officials would be held Thursday to discuss the matter.
Two Indian villagers had been killed and four injured when BDR troopers opened fire from across the border at Kakchipara in Cooch Behar district.
