Indian Army Continuing Counter Terrorism Operations In Assam

Dated 28/6/2008

The Indian army said it has not suspended counterinsurgency operations against an armed terror group in northeastern Assam state. The army said its operations against the rebels of militant group United Liberation Front of Assam in the Upper Assam districts are continuing, as it has yet to receive any instruction from the government for suspension of operations.

According to an army official, the A and C companies of ULFA's 28th Battalion have declared a cease-fire, but for suspension of operations, a formal cease-fire agreement has to be signed between the militants and the government. "If the militants, who want to sign cease-fire agreements with the government, abide by the ground rules, there should not be a problem," the official said, adding that as per the conditions laid down by the Unified Command for militants who want to come into a cease-fire agreement, all of them must stay in designated camps after signing of such agreement and deposit their weapons.

If militants follow these conditions after signing cease-fire agreements, there should not be any operational problems, he said, and asserted that till operations are formally suspended, anyone found to be indulging in terrorist activities would be dealt with strongly.
