Pakistani military base hit by rockets in tribal region; soldier, three others killed

Dated 2/10/2005

Assailants fired rockets at a military base in Pakistan's northwest tribal region near the border with Afghanistan on Sunday, killing one army soldier and three other government employees, an intelligence official said.

Four other people were injured in the pre-dawn attack on the base in Mir Ali, a town in North Waziristan, an intelligence official in the area said on condition of anonymity, citing the secretive nature of his job.

About 20 rockets were fired in the attack, some hitting the living quarters of soldiers and other government employees. The dead and injured were sleeping in the barracks at the time, the intelligence official said.

Five other rockets landed in two villages nearby, damaging some homes, he said.

No one claimed responsibility, but officials have blamed previous rocket attacks and roadside bombings on suspected Islamic militants.

In recent days, army troops have battled suspected Islamic fighters in another area of North Waziristan.

Eleven people, including four soldiers, have been killed in clashes in the past two days. No fresh fighting was reported on Sunday.
