Iran rejects new US, EU-3 proposal

Dated 10/11/2005

Iran has rejected a US and EU-3 proposal to continue with its civilian nuclear programme if Russia enriches its fuel, saying it defeats its national goal to be energy self-reliant.

It has agreed to the second part of the proposal for fullscope IAEA safeguards at its nuclear facilities and unhindered inspection of its imports, scientific exchanges and atomic sites, but the US won't settle for anything less than acceptance of the entire scheme, even having agreed to this after considerable EU-3 persuasion, which favoured a solution more than a confrontation.

The IAEA board of governors will meet on 24 November to vote if Iran should be referred to the UN Security Council for violating the NPT and continuing with its illegal weapons' programme.

Iran has said that all its considerable investment in enrichment technology would go waste if this has to be done in Russia, and anyhow, this would not serve its national goal.
