December 16th Vijay Diwas celebrations open to the public2005-12-14 New Delhi: The 34th Vijay Diwas will be celebrated on the 16TH of December to remember those brave soldiers of the Indian armed forces who laid down their lives fighting for the nation. It was on this day in 1971 that the Indian Army, Navy and the Air Force and the para-military forces together achieved a historic victory over the Pakistani forces.The multi-pronged swift operation was executed with great valour which led to the formation of Bangladesh. It was also on this day that the largest military surrender after World War II took place, when the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Command, Lt Gen Jagjit Singh Arora accepted the instrument of surrender from Lt Gen AAK Niazi of the Pakistan Army at Dhaka. To commemorate this occasion a grand function is being organized on the 16th and 17th of this month at Amar Jawan Jyoti, India Gate and the National Stadium with a number of events being held. It is for the first time that Vijay Diwas is being celebrated at such a large scale as a Tri-Services event at the behest of the Defence Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee. A series of events will begin at 0845 am on the 16th of December with wreath laying by the Defence Minister, the Minister of State for Defence and the three Service Chiefs at the Amar Jawan Jyoti. Therafter a cultural programme would be presented by the NCC cadets and Tri-Services Band display at the National Stadium. In the evening there will be Tri-Services band concert alongwith lighting of candles and paying of laurel tribute by the general public at Amar Jawan Jyoti. The events at National Stadium will be witnessed by all senior officials serving / retired of the three services, Ministry of Defence, Ex-servicemen, school children and general public. Aircraft such as the MiG-21 and the Sabre Killer Gnat which saw their first operations in 1971 war would be on display. It is well known that a Gnat pilot, Fg Offr Nirmal Jit Sekhon was awarded Param Vir Chakra for the 1971 operations. The Pechora and IGLA missile systems would be on display along with Indra II & P19 Radar System.
