Kathmandu Five blasts rocked areas around the Nepalese capital on Saturday, killing at least 12 policemen and injuring eight others.

The rebels attacked eight targets in all. At least two of the blasts hit police stations.

The incident occured at Thankot, just 10 km from Kathmandu.

Since the Maoists declared an end to their four-month unilateral ceasefire January 2, 45 people have been killed and 29 injured.

Security was tightened in the capital following the strikes.

The blasts came hours after security forces said they had killed 16 rebels in a firefight.

Privately-owned newspapers said 12 police were killed, while a police source said 14 had died.

In Thankot, a major entry point west of the capital, the Maoists hurled bombs and stormed a police station.

One police officer was killed and seven policemen and a civilian were injured in the town of Bhaktapur, east of Kathmandu.
