The GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) system being developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in association with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will be operational within a year.

The GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) system being developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in association with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will be operational within a year, informed AAI Air Traffic Management (ATM) Executive Director Srikrishna.

Speaking to Deccan Herald after inspecting the new runway, air traffic control (ATC) systems, ILS, fire station and other communication systems here on Tuesday, he said the AAI decided to implement an indigenous satellite based regional GPS augmentation system, also known as Space-based Augmentation System (SBAS), as part of the Satellite Based Communication, Navigation, Surveillance/ Air Traffic Management (ATM) plan for civil aviation. The Indian SBAS is called GAGAN.

"Once the satellite is launched, all the communications pertaining to ATC will be done through the facility," he said and added, "presently very few countries have the facility and India will soon be among them."

Unlike traditional ground-based navigation aids, the GAGAN will cover nearly all of the Indian airspace. "GAGAN provides augmentation information to GPS receivers to enhance the accuracy and reliability of position estimates," he noted.

Earlier implementation of the satellite based communication, navigation and surveillance over the Indian Airspace will enhance India
