The Indian government is worried about the fast deteriorating situation in Nepal and is seriously considering a UN intervention to bring all the warring parties to negotiate a new roadmap for peace.
The UN proposal has been with India for three weeks, but it is uncomfortable with a UN intervention, although there is realisation that it is best placed to at least stop the fighting.
Officials and diplomats said that Nepal's King Gyanendra is under tremendous pressure from the international community and from his own advisors to have a truce with the Maoists.
The king is wavering but remains opposed to a UN role, which will undermine his own position, but it is likely that the US and the European Union may pressure him to accept a UN peace roadmap to be honoured by all the disputants.
