Baloch freedom fighters attack train in Pakistan

2006-02-27 Quetta: A passenger train in Pakistan's Balochistan province has been derailed after coming under gun attack, official say. There were no reports of injuries.

Earlier, rail track in the area, near Sibi, some 70km (44 miles) south of the provincial capital, Quetta, was damaged in an explosion.

In another incident nearby, three security personnel supervising track repairs were injured in a gun attack.

Gas-rich Balochistan province has seen increased violence in recent months.

Tribal separatists have been pushing for greater political and economic rights and have attacked gas plants, electricity lines and railway tracks.

Divisional superintendent of railway, Naeem Malik told the BBC that they were investigating whether the blast was caused by a rocket strike or a remote-controlled explosive device.

Frontier Corps spokesman Hasan Jamil said that more troops were being sent to secure the area.
