Air Force needed to think out-of-the box on IT application: Tyagi2006-03-02 Bangalore: Being a technology-intensive service that used high-end hardware and software systems, IAF needed an over-arching IT architecture using internet and best commercial practices, according to Air Chief Marshal S P Tyagi, Chief of the Air Staff.Delivering the inaugural address at a seminar on 'IT Challenges in IAF', he emphasised the need to identify similarities with the business process of the industry and reshape the business process of IAF to make optimal use of IT. For this, the IAF would need to think out-of-the box, he said. According to Air Marshal B N Gokhale, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Training Command, the IAF's specific needs and security concerns had dictated that the solutions be developed in-house. The IAF had a lot to learn from the civil sector and therefore urged the industry to have a greater participation in defence applications. Air Marshal A K Nagalia, Deputy Chief of Air Staff said that IAF is embarking upon IT intitiatives which should have a greater reach and application, shrinking distance and time to facilitate timely decision making. In his address, Azim Premji, Chairman Wipro Technologies stated that to create a superior air force, India must indigenise high-tech R and D to design and develop integrated defence systems. He also such seminars as a major stride forward in the relationship between IAF and Indian IT companies.
