Iran likely to withdraw from Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT)

2006-03-17 Iran has given enough hints that it may withdraw from the NPT if the UN Security Council (UNSC) moves to impose sanctions against it.

Iran briefed its position to Russian leaders, saying it would unilaterally quit NPT and commence the full enrichment process.

Iran maintains that so far it has not started any critical activities pertaining to its nuclear programme despite threatening to do so.

But if necessary, in case UNSC sanctions are imposed, then it would go ahead with all the plans that are not on the board presently.

Diplomats said Iran could come out in the open once the matter is admitted into the UNSC, and this would end the diplomatic process.
