Maoist blockade paralyses Nepal , Army on high alert

2006-03-18 Kathmandu: Prices of essential commodities in Nepal have soared and movement of vehicles was badly hit on the fifth day of the Maoist-sponsored blockade today, as the royal government provided armed escort to vehicles to facilitate traffic on major highways.

Supplies of kerosene and cooking gas were affected and prices of vegetables and other essential commodities have risen sharply causing immense hardship to people, traders said.

Nepal Oil Corporation has stopped supplying kerosene, petrol and diesel though adequate stocks were available, petroleum dealers complained.

Reports from the famous tourist spot Pokhara said no trucks and buses have been plying in the far-away parts of the town due to the Maoist threats. The rebels also pelted stones at two buses and a taxi for defying the bandh.

In an effort to counter the blockade, escort with tight security was provided to vehicles, mainly passenger buses and trucks carrying essential commodities, on important highways connecting Kathmandu, officials said.

About 100 vehicles entered the capital yesterday and the vehicular movement increased today as the army has escorted many vehicles along the highway, they claimed.

Vehicles moved to and from Kathmandu and other major cities of the country including Birgunj, Pokhara, Butawal, Bhairahawa, Narayanghat and Gorkha amidst stepped up security on the highways, they said.

The political parties and the human rights organizations have asked the Maoists to withdraw their three- week long strike and blockade taking into consideration the hardships being faced by the general public.
