US may be compelled to attack Iran: Blackwill2006-04-26 New Delhi: The US might be compelled to attack Iran if it continues with its clandestine nuclear programme, but this would have a 'volcanic reaction', former US ambassador to India Robert Blackwill said here Wednesday.'What I fear is that we might be heading for a binary choice for President (George W.) Bush,' said Blackwill, who has served as Bush's deputy assistant. 'Either we acquiesce to Iran's nuclear programme or we take military action,' Blackwill said while speaking on India-US relations at a seminar organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here. 'This is not a conflict between the US and Iran but between Iran and almost every other country in the world except perhaps Belarus and Cuba,' he contended. Holding that efforts were being made to find a diplomatic solution to the imbroglio, Blackwill said the military option was 'bad' because the last thing the region needed was another war. 'The attack would produce a volcanic reaction in the Muslim world, it would severely impact on oil prices and would solidify the Iranian people behind the regime,' he maintained. Pointing to the efforts of US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to find a diplomatic solution, Blackwill lamented that there was 'nothing to suggest that Iran is also working toward this'.
