Pakistan seeks more Chinese nuclear support

2006-04-26 Islamabad: Envisaging a target of 8,800 MW of nuclear power generation in the next 20 years, Pakistan has turned to traditional ally China to help meet its rapidly growing energy needs.

In return, Pakistan is offering land-locked western China access through its territory to gas-rich Central Asia.

Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz told the Pakistan-China Energy Forum here that negotiations for the power plants were underway. Both countries would cooperate in power generation through coal and other energy alternatives, he said.

Besides, Pakistan would enhance its exploitation of hydropower to generate cheaper electricity, Aziz said.

'We are also working on various options to import gas from Iran, Turkmenistan and Qatar,' he added.

Around 150 Chinese delegates from the energy sector and 300 delegates from Pakistan are attending the forum, organised by the ministry of petroleum.

Pakistan is building a deep water port at Gwadar in Balochistan province with Chinese assistance. 'We are interested in developing Gwadar not only as a trans-shipment port but also as an energy port for reliable oil supplies to western China and Central Asia,' Aziz said.

Aziz said Pakistan wanted to expand economic cooperation with China particularly in manufacturing, IT, telecommunications, real estate, petroleum, chemicals and infrastructure.

Hu Deping, Chinese minister and first vice chairman of the All China Federation of Industry and Commerce, said ties between Pakistan and China had reached 'a new apex.'
