China has threatened to veto the draft action plan against Iran to be discussed and adopted by the UN Security Council next week that speaks of sanctions followed by military strikes.
Chinese foreign minister Li Zhao Xing threatened the veto when the British foreign secretary, Jack Straw, discussed the draft plan with him, which has the concurrence of the US, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, some EU members, besides countries in Africa and Latin America.
Russia is already opposed to sanctions and military strikes, and while China would go along with sanctions, it still feels hard action against Iran would escalate tensions and destabilise Asia as a whole.
