Nepal axes three national security chiefs, spares army2006-05-12 Kathmandu: The new Nepal government of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala Friday suspended the three chiefs of national security but spared the powerful head of the army. The steps were a move to bring to justice officials who supported King Gyanendra's unconstitutional regime and enforced anti-people measures like daytime curfew, mass arrests, torture in custody and extra-judicial killings. Shyam Bhakta Thapa, chief of Nepal Police, Shahbir Thapa, Armed Police Force chief, and Deviram Mishra, head of National Investigation Department, were suspended following recommendations of a high-level judicial commission. The five-member Rayamajhi Commission was set up this week to identify royalist ministers, bureaucrats and security officials responsible for trying to brutally suppress anti-king protests last month and causing 21 deaths. Though the commission headed by former Supreme Court judge Krishna Jung Rayamajhi also recommended suspending General Pyar Jung Thapa, chief of the Royal Nepalese Army, the new government decided not to antagonise the powerful army that still remains loyal to the king and its generals. The suspension came after Koirala called a meeting of his ministers Friday afternoon to discuss the recommendations of the commission. The government also ordered the arrest of five royalist ministers following the panel's recommendations. More heads are expected to roll in the coming days as the commission proceeds with its investigations. Sponsored Links
