Russia has agreed to a British proposal to suspend military exports to Iran but this won’t be for long nor will contracted deals be scrapped.
Russian-Iranian defence deals are bilateral and nearly a dozen military cooperation agreements have been signed in the last five years.
The Russian move is to pressure Iran to abide by international rules and negotiate a peaceful solution to the vexed nuclear issue.
Russia has been under tremendous US and Western pressure to stop military cooperation with Iran to force it to end its illegal weapons’ programme.
Diplomats said that the Russian decision followed its foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov’s private talk with his British counterpart, Margaret Beckett.
