United States to fund $3.5 ml worth Pakistani military acquisitions

2006-08-05 The George W. Bush administration today pledged USD 3.5 million for the modernization of the Pakistani paramilitary forces along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

The Administration justified the funding posing it as a counter to the rapid 'Talibanization' of the North West Frontier Province (Pakistan).

The aid pledge was made in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between US Ambassador to Pakistan Ryan C Crocker and Commandant Frontier Constabulary Malik Naveed Khan, PTI reported.

United States recently allowed the sale of nuclear weapons delivery capable F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan, despite fears of the Pakistani establishment leaking critical technical information to the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Government of India voicing fears.

Pakistan and China have enjoyed a close military, defense and strategic relationship for the past 4 decades. Recently the Washington Times reported satellite photography showing the expansion of the Pakistani nuclear programme, despite the A,Q. Khan nuclear proliferation incident.

The United States has given assistance to Pakistan Army and the Frontier Corps deployed in the tribal region to deal with rising militancy and cross-border infiltration into Afghanistan. But this is the first time that the Frontier Constabulary, a civil armed force operating essentially as a buffer paramilitary force between the tribal region and the settled districts of the NWFP, has become the recipient of US largesse.

The aid follows reports in the national and international media over the spread of an outfit called 'Pakistan Taliban' whose self-styled Taliban commanders have begun issuing 'fatwas' to local people asking men to grow beards, women to wear burqas and banning music even during marriage ceremonies.

The bulk of aid would be spent on purchase of non-lethal equipment and construction of paramilitary posts along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in the tribal regions of North and South Waziristan.
