Suspected ULFA terrorists tossed grenades at an army convoy in the Indian north eastern state of Assam, killing a soldier and wounding two others, police said Saturday.

The attack came even as security across the terror inflicted region was tightened to prevent terror attacks ahead of India's Independence Day celebrations on August 15.

The three-vehicle convoy of the Indian army was attacked on Friday night near Tinsukia town, said Deputy Inspector General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta. The convoy was carrying food and grocery to an army camp near Tinsukia, 400 kilometers (250 miles) east of Gauhati, Assam's capital, he said.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but Mahanta blamed the United Liberation Front of Asom, or ULFA, which has been fighting for an 'independent homeland' since 1979.

Last October, ULFA rebels agreed to hold peace talks with the Indian government, but the negotiations were stalled after three rounds because the two sides failed to reconcile differences.

Meanwhile, security analysts blamed the Islamic Republic of Bangladesh for providing safe haven, training and aid to anti-India groups active in the north east. A Bangladeshi connection was also proven in the 7/11 Mumbai Terror Attacks which saw over 190 civilians dead.
