Pakistan launches third advanced Agosta submarine2006-08-10 General Musharraf today launched Pakistan's third Agosta-90 B class submarine which was built with French assistance. The new submarine called Humza is the latest of the three submarines built under the $1.6 billion deal with French company DCN. The deal included transfer of technology under which Pakistan Navy plans to build more such submarines in future and even claims of plans to market them worldwide. The first submarine, Agosta 90-B (Khalid), manufactured with French assistance was commissioned in the Pakistan Navy in 1999 while the second submarine, Agosta 90-B (Saad) was commissioned in 2004. The submarine was expected to strengthen the Pakistan Navy which embarked on a modernisation plan which included six more frigates, (three from Greece and three more from China) in the coming years. President Gen. Pervez Musharraf in a special message thanked the French government for its assistance and said the launch of Hamza was a highly significant event to "further strengthen" the defences of the sea frontiers. Vice Admiral of Pakistan Navy, Mohammad Haroon said the new submarine belonged to third generation of submarines and belonged to the same class of Scorpene and type 214 submarines being built by France and Germany. "Equipped with state of the art combat suites, proficient sub-launched missiles, sophisticated sea proven equipment and systems, these submarines are ranked as deepest diving platforms of the region", Haroon said. Unlike the other two Agosta submarines, Hamza is fitted with air independent module MESMA with which it could stay underwater for over month unlike others which has far shorter stay period.
