Indian Army brigade submerged in Kargil floods, no casualities2006-08-11 An entire Indian army brigade is reported to have been submerged following flood in river Suru in Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir caused by a cloudburst in the region. There were no reports of any casualty. "The brigade premises in Kargil are currently submerged under water but there are no reports of any casualties or army personnel missing in the incident," a spokesman of the Srinagar-based 15 corps of the army said here. However, an army official at Kargil told PTI over phone that 15 buildings in the brigade premises were damaged by the rolling stones and mudslides caused by the cloudburst. "The situation is bad here and we are in the process of ascertaining the losses," the official said. The telephone lines to the brigade have been snapped and the main gate of the premises has also been blocked by the mudlsides. The flooding in river Suru was caused by a cloudburst accompanied by heavy rainfall today, he said. He said the cloudburst caused a part of the mountain to slide into the river, leading to its blockade. The water from river Suru, which was already flowing close to danger mark, crossed over the banks and entered the army camp, he added. This is second incident of cloudbusrt in Kargil this month. On Sunday, three armymen and two Nepali labourers were washed away in flash floods caused by cloudburst at Batalik sector in Kargil area. Sponsored Links
