Germany, India sign first ever defense cooperation pact2006-09-07 India and Germany have signed a defence and security agreement that will change the contour of the bilateral relationship from a 'buyer-seller' one to that of a partnership."I am quite sure that our relationship will graduate from the level of 'buyer-seller' relationship to that of cooperation, joint development and transfer of technology," Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee said after signing the pact with his German counterpart, Franz Joseph Jung. The pact aims to establish a strategic dialogue at the level of defence secretaries through a group called the India-Germany High Defence Committee (HDC). "HDC will meet once a year, alternately, in India and Germany. Under the HDC, the two countries will form three sub- groups to focus on strategic defence cooperation, defence technical cooperation and military to military cooperation, Mukherjee said. With the signing of the MoU and the establishment of a High Defence Committee, a regular institutional mechanism has een established, Mukherjee added. Describing Germany as a 'trusted and valued friend of India', Mukherjee said that the already existing high degree of economic and commercial cooperation with Berlin has now been extended to the areas of defence and security. The two ministers also discussed possible avenues of cooperation against international terrorism. The Defence Minister ends his tour on Friday. Earlier on Wednesday, Mukherjee held talks with the German Minister for Economics and Technology, Michael Glos. He also paid homage to Indian soldiers at the World War I cemetery in Zehrensdorf. Mukherjee had earlier visited Paris where he held discussions with his French counterpart Michele Alliot-Marie. Sponsored Links
