Army patrol ambushed in Manipur, 4 soldiers dead2006-09-12 Terrorists ambushed an army patrol in India's remote northeast state of Manipur on Tuesday, fatally shooting four soldiers and wounding another three, an army spokesman said. The attack occurred near Mapouan, a village 25 kilometers (15 miles) east of Imphal, the capital of Manipur state, said Col. S. D. Goswami. The assailants fled after the soldiers fired back, he said. Nearly 40 soldiers were on a routine patrol when suspected rebels fired at their three moving vehicles from the other side of the road, Goswami said. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. Seventeen insurgent groups have been fighting government forces in Manipur, a state of two million people, since the 1980s, demanding an independent homeland or autonomy. The government reached cease-fire accords with 12 smaller groups in August last year. The truce with these groups was extended indefinitely last month. However, key groups like the 'People's Liberation Army' and the 'United National Liberation Front' have continued to fight. Sponsored Links
