Naga rebels consolidating during ceasefire: Indian Army

2006-09-25 The Indian Army has accused Naga rebels of using the existing cease-fire to regroup, in a statement made in Kohima on Monday.

"During this period of cease-fire both factions are concentrating on recruitment, acquiring better weaponry, fabrication systems, and reaching out to the people. We have taken this up with the MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs), saying that this should be discouraged," said Major General S. S Kumar of the North Assam Rifles.

Unification of Naga-dominated areas in the north-east and ultimately independence is central to rebel demands.

New Delhi extended its ceasefire with Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland or NSCN (Issac-Muivah) on July 31 and with the NSCN Khaplang faction in April this year.

The remote northeast, linked to the rest of the country by a strip of land just 32 km wide, is home to seven of India's 29 states and is surrounded by China, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Bhutan.

The region has over 200 ethnic and tribal communities and two dozen rebel groups.
