NIIGATA
The 8,346-ton ship is making a four-day port call to conduct friendship activities and give its crew members some time to rest, the Niigata prefectural government said.
It is the second time an Aegis-equipped U.S. vessel has called at Niigata, which is about 900 kilometers east of the Korean Peninsula across the Sea of Japan. The Niigata prefectural government said Monday it gave permission for the 8,346-ton vessel to enter port at 9 a.m. Friday and depart at 9 a.m. Monday.
The U.S. Aegis guided missile destroyer Curtis Wilbur will make a four-day port call at Niigata from Friday, apparently as part of the U.S. Navy's missile defense program for training and information gathering to counter perceived North Korean ballistic missile threats.
