India and Britain are to step up cooperation in the field of counter terrorism, particularly in protecting mass transit systems and infrastructure, the foreign ministers of the two countries said Thursday.

Both Britain and India have been victims of large-scale attacks on their transit systems, with the July 7, 2005, attack on the London Underground that killed at least 54 people and the July 12 train bombings in Mumbai that killed more than 200 people.

"Both our countries have been the victims of terrorism," said Indian Minister of External Affairs Pranab Mukherjee after a meeting with his British counterpart, Margaret Beckett.

"We discussed strengthening cooperation in counterterrorism and have agreed to a meeting of our experts in the area of protection of critical national infrastructure such as the mass transit system and other assets," Mukherjee said.

"There are some very concrete ways here in which we are sharing our very unfortunate and tragic joint experience in trying to learn from each others' experience," Beckett said.

The British Foreign Secretary is in India for a six-day visit. She also met with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday.
