Five killed, Many Injured in Train Blast in North Bengal

2006-11-20 In a suspected strike by militants in a train, at least five persons were killed and 60 were wounded in a powerful blast in a compartment near Belakova station in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district this evening.

The explosion occurred at 6:30 pm in a general compartment of Haldibari-Jalpaiguri passenger train and was so powerful that it ripped off a side and the roof of the bogey as the train was between Raninagar and Belakoba railway stations, Superintendent of Railway Police, Jalpaiguri, Mahendra Singh Punia told PTI in Siliguri.

"Five passengers died on the spot while 56 were injured," Home Secretary P R Roy said in Kolkata, adding the toll may go up.

The bodies were charred beyond recognition, IGP (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia told PTI here.

Left Front chairman Biman Bose, however, put the toll at six dead and 60 wounded.

State minister Jogesh Burman said as several injured were in a critical condition, the death count might go up.

Roy said the explosion was the handiwork of suspected militants in North Bengal.

Asked if he suspected the militant outfit Kamtapur Liberation Organisation, which has links with ULFA, Roy said "It looks like the handiwork of a militant organisation. We are trying to get the details. The bomb was suspected to have been planted in the train."

Eyewitnesses said there was a flash followed by a deafening explosion. There were two small explosions immediately afterwards.

"Some of the passengers jumped out of the coach in panic while many received burns," they said.

The Home Secretary, when asked if he suspected the militant Kamtapur Liberation Organisation, which has links with ULFA, said "The KLO might have a hand and so can the ULFA. We are trying to get the details."

NF Railway sources in Malegaon in Assam, under which the railway division falls, said a medical relief team left Siliguri immediately after receiving information about the blast while another left Guwahati.

No militant group has so far claimed responsibility for the blast.
