India Takes Steps to Prevent Illegal Smuggling of Arms

2006-12-06 The Government has initiated several measures to prevent smuggling of arms, ammunition and explosives from across the borders.

These include fencing of eastern and western borders, deployment of border guarding forces, strengthening of intelligence capacity along the borders, periodic sensitization of border guarding forces and the State governments particularly in the border States, strengthening of coastal security, etc.

The Government has taken steps to enhance surveillance and physical security and scanning of baggage at the airports.

As per information available with the Union Home Ministry, about 724 Kgs. of RDX was seized by police and security forces in different parts of the country in 2006 (till October).

In the year 2005, approximately 1021 Kgs. of RDX was seized.

However, there are no inputs to suggest that the RDX so seized was smuggled into the country through the Airports. Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) looks after the security of a large number of Airports.
