Army Steps Up Operations Against ULFA in Assam

2007-01-08 The army today intensified operations against the ULFA in upper Assam by deploying over 10,000 troops as reports began trickling in of Hindi-speaking migrants fleeing areas where the banned group has gunned down 68 non-Assamese people.

"Operations against ULFA insurgents have been intensified in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Nalbari and other areas of upper Assam," an army official said here as Defence Minister A K Antony chaired a high-level meeting of the three service chiefs and the defence secretary to take stock of the situation in Assam.

Antony and army chief Gen J J Singh will tomorrow travel to Tezpur in Assam on their way to forward areas on the Sino-Indian border like Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.

Antony will chair a meeting at Tezpur of top commanders of the army's 4 Corps, which is responsible for anti- insurgency operations in upper Assam where the ULFA has carried out a string of attacks since Friday. The meet will be attended by Corps Commander Lt Gen Ranjit Chabra, Army Commander Lt Gen KS Jamwal and other top officers.

The meeting, which is also likely to be attended by Lt Gen M S Dadwal, Commander of Nagaland-based 3 Corps, will take stock of the situation in Assam and the operations against major northeastern insurgent groups.

Pointing out that the orders for the current campaign to target innocent civilians in Assam had come from ULFA's top brass holed up in Bangladesh, an army source said, "It is a manifestation of the frustation of ULFA cadres after they suffered military losses in recent months."

According to the sources, ULFA cadres had been decimated in an operation launched by Bhutanese troops in 2003 to smash their hideouts in that country, and are now estimated to number about 1,000 to 1,100.

"The army has deployed two brigades in operations against ULFA cadres," a source said, adding that the cadres had been under heavy pressure in recent months after having suffered 30 to 50 casualities.

Asked if the Myanmar Army had launched coordinated operations against ULFA and other northeastern rebels hiding in that country, army officials said they could not comment on what other forces were doing.

There have been reports from the Indo-Mynmar border of Mynmar troops launching a crackdown on hideouts of northeastern militants in the neighbouring country.
