Army, Para-Military Forces Conduct Operation Against ULFA

2007-01-10 The Army, the Para-military forces and the police today carried out a joint offensive against the ULFA in Assam where 70 people have been killed in attacks by the outfit on non-Assamese people since Friday.

No fresh violence was reported in the State since yesterday. With Army re-inforcements arriving here, intensive combined operations were launched against the ULFA by the Army, the Para-military forces and the police, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters here.

Additional 20 companies of the Army and Para-military forces (around 2,000 personnel) have arrived in the State, Gogoi said.

"There is a sense of insecurity among the Hindi-speaking people, and my priority is to restore peace, instill confidence and a sense of security among them," he said.

"Yesterday, I had a discussion with Defence Minister A K Anthony, Defence Secretary, Chief of Army Staff and Operational Commanders at Tezpur on how to effectively and vigorously deal with the situation," Gogoi said.

"We made an assessment of how many forces were needed, intelligence-gathering and also on how to deal with the situation of the marauding ULFA taking shelter in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh where the Army Special Powers Act is not in operation," he said.

"Tackling the situation is a great challenge. We cannot allow such violence to continue in the State," he asserted.
