Pakistan to Receive First of Eight P-3 C Orion from United States2007-01-14 The Pakistan Navy will get the first of the eight P-3C Orion aircraft from the US on January 18, Chief of Pakistan Navy, Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir has said.Admiral Tahir said the induction of the versatile reconnaissance aircraft would enhance the Pakistan Navy's operational capabilities. The Orion could be used for anti-submarine warfare, ship warfare, maritime surveillance, naval fleet support, searches and survivor supply, he said. He said it was vital to improve the country's defence capabilities, and therefore the Pakistan Navy was in the process of acquiring other modern weaponry, reports the Daily Times. "Pakistan cannot remain oblivious of its defence needs and had to take into account India's plans for the acquisition of sophisticated weapons in the formulation of its defence strategy. Pakistan does not harbour aggressive designs against any country, but it is imperative for us to keep enhancing our defence capability in order to protect our sovereignty and integrity," the Dawn quoted him as saying.
