Army Captures Seven ULFA Terrorists in Assam

2007-01-18 Indian Army in the violence-wracked northeast arrested seven suspected rebels as they tried to flee to neighboring Myanmar, the army said on Thursday.

The seven were captured while heading toward Myanmar, said Maj. Gen. N.C. Marwah, the army commander in the region.

Despite using about 25,000 soldiers, the army has had little success in finding the rebels, who travel in small groups.

However, Marwah said one of those captured appeared to be a senior ULFA leader.

On Wednesday a bomb blamed on the ULFA killed two people in a crowded market in Gauhati, capital of the northeastern state of Assam.

The ULFA has not claimed responsibility for any of the attacks.

The killings of the migrants - Assam's worst violence in years - came after authorities called off peace talks and a temporary truce with the ULFA in September, resuming military offensives against ULFA.

At least 10,000 people in Assam, most of them civilians, have died over the last three decades in fighting between government forces and separatists.
