Government Wakes Up to Plight of Assam Rifles; Pay Package to be Reviewed2007-03-13 Against the backdrop of reports of unrest in Assam Rifles, a high-level meeting here today constituted a committee to go into welfare measures for the personnel in the force and enhance its effectiveness. The meeting, attended by Home Secretary V K Duggal and Defence Secretary Sekhar Dutt, and other senior officials, came in the wake of reports of discontent among Assam Rifles jawans over issues of pay, perks, facilities and their status. "The committee has been given a month's time to submit its recommendations," Duggal told reporters. Since Assam Rifles came under the dual control of the Defence and Home Ministries, the Secretary (Border Management) in the MHA, Vice Chief of the Army Staff, Special Secretaries in both the ministries, Director General Military Operations and Director General Assam Rifles attended the meeting. Duggal, however, described today's discussions as a "normal, routine review meeting" and said that since the central para-military forces posted at the border or in the hinterland were engaged in the most arduous tasks, the security establishments look at all aspects to motivate them. He said further appropriate actions would be initiated in a time bound manner based on today's discussions. The Home Secretary categorically denied any unrest in the Assam Rifles, whose operational command lies with the Defence Ministry while administrative control is with the Home Minsitry.
