Security forces gunned down four separatist terrorists of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) while in another incident a senior ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader survived an attempt on his life in north Kashmir Sunday.
Police officials said troops of the 47 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and police early Sunday surrounded the jungle area near Manganwar Kandi village in north Kashmir's Kupwara district, 102 km from here, on a specific tip-off regarding the presence of a group of LeT terrorists.
'While the troops were busy searching the jungle, the hiding militants opened heavy fire at them. The security forces returned the fire and a fierce gunfight ensued,' said Superintendent of Police (Kupwara) Vijay Kumar.
'In the daylong gunfight four militants of LeT were gunned down,' he said.
Late Sunday, militants attacked the heavily guarded residence of Ghulam Muhammad Lone, PDP leader and chairman of the Municipal Committee of Ganderbal.
Police said one SPO was seriously wounded in the explosion, which also damaged the windowpanes of Lone's house at Bamloora Ganderbal, 23 km from summer capital Srinagar.
Lone and his family, however, escaped unhurt in the attack, they said.
Police guards at Lone's residence returned the fire. The explosion and subsequent firing led to panic in the area. Senior police officers rushed to the spot.
