Braving terrorist threats, war-weary Kashmiri youth were queuing in hope of impressing officers running the Indian Army Recruitment Drive in Srinagar on 23rd of May 2007.

The number of young men attending the drives and other such events are being seen by the authorities as a sign that some degree of what they call "normalcy" is returning to Jammu and Kashmir.

Despite all the negative propaganda from Pakistan and pro separatist 'politicians', the Kashmiri youth today is keen to join the Indian Armed Forces and serve the country and fighting against the enemy.

The Indian Army has recruited over 1200 jawans from Kashmir in 2006 and the recruitment drive has gotten only larger ever since. The first such Kashmir specific recruitment drive began in January 2006.

With popular opinion increasingly turning against terror, the Army's recruitment drive could be an important medium for integrating the Kashmiri youth into the national mainstream.
