Indian Army To Cut Troop Size By 25,000: Times Now

Popular television news channel 'Times Now' reports that the Indian Army is all set to reduce the number of troops by 25,000 over the next two years.

Excerpts From Srinjoy Choudhary's Report

-- Fourth largest army in the world, with more than 1.1 million men at arms, but its also an army that is modernising rapidly with force multipliers increasing the lethality of the common trooper;

-- Numbers to be reduced by 25,000 over the next two years;

-- General VP Malik had cut 50,000 troops but after the Kargil war, the numbers were again increased. The December 13 2001 Parliament attack, when Indian troops stood eyeball to eyeball with the Pakistanis, ended the possibility of a cut;

-- Troop cut will be gradual and not affect its operational ability;

-- The defence pension bill climbing to thirteen thousand crores, and the army's annual wage bill thirty nine thousand crores;
