Kashmir's Al Qaida CD Threatens Jihad Against India

2007-06-08 Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir went into a tizzy after a compact disc purportedly containing propaganda material of the international terror group al Qaeda was circulated among the media in the militancy-hit state.

The police top brass maintained that the authenticity of the CD was being verified, but police officials are taking it seriously and have begun investigations into the matter.

The CD was given to a local news agency here along with a statement issued by al Qaeda's so-called "India chief" Abu Abdul Rehman al-Ansari, in which he spoke against the separatist leadership of the state as well as the United Jehad Council, an amalgam of militant groups based in Pakistan.

Director General of Police Gopal Sharma told a news agency that his department has taken cognisance of the CD and was verifying its authenticity. "We have come to know about the CD and are in the process of verifying its authenticity. It will be premature to make a comment at this moment," he said.

In New Delhi, the Home Ministry issued a statement that it too was verifying the autheticity of the CD.

While pointing out that there was "no need to panic", the ministry`s statement said: "We view such activities and threats as a desperate effort by terrorist and anti-national elements to try and create problems in the country and scare among the people."

"A close watch is being maintained by the state and Central government agencies and action is being taken on a continuous basis to foil such designs," the Home Ministry`s statement said. The al Qaeda statement allegedly issued by al-Ansari claims that 1,000 copies of it has been distributed in mosques across the Kashmir Valley.

The 15-minute CD shows a masked man with an AK assault rifle reading out a statement in Urdu that criticises the role of certain separatist leaders including those of the Hurriyat Conference, whose photographs were also displayed.

Photos of some political leaders of the state, including Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and National Conference patron Farooq Abdullah, also feature in the CD. It was not clear whether the masked man was the so-called "India chief" of Al Qaeda.
