USS Nimitz Nuclear Safety Record Outstanding: United States2007-06-26 Amid growing opposition to the proposed visit of American warship 'USS Nimitz' to the port here, the United States Consulate General in the city today sought to allay apprehensions over possible nuclear radiation, saying the safety record of US nuclear-powered warship was "outstanding.""There has never been a nuclear accident in the 56-plus year history of the program. US Navy nuclear-powered warships have steamed more than 135 million miles and amassed more than 5,700 reactor-years of safe operating experience," a release from the US Consulate General here said. 'USS Nimitz,' one of the world's largest aircraft carriers, would dock in Chennai in early July, the first ever port call in India by a US aircraft carrier and a landmark event in US-India bilateral relations, it said. It also noted that the US and Indian Navies had conducted increasingly elaborate joint exercises on the high seas over the past several years, regularly cooperating in a bilateral and multilateral framework known as the 'Malabar series' of joint Indo-US exercises. While docked in the city, sailors from the USS Nimitz would volunteer in numerous goodwill events in the local community such as cleaning local sites, refurbishing buildings and interacting with various sections of the community.
