India, Israel To Jointly Develop Barak II Ship Defense Missile System

2007-07-12 India will jointly develop and co-produce a new generation of medium range surface-to-air missiles with Israel to secure the country's strategic assets from growing threats posed by aerial attacks and the proliferation of missiles in the region.

This release by the Press Trust of India confirmed an India Defence report published earlier this month.

The setting up of a joint venture for production of the missiles at an estimated cost of Rs 10,000 crore (2.5 billion dollars) was cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security, which was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

According to highly placed defence sources, the new generation missile with the capability of hitting aerial targets 70 km away would be developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, Indian Air Force and Israel Aerospace Industries.

The DRDO will be the "prime contractor" for the project, which will have an indigenous component of Rs 2,300 crore. The new generation missile will replace the IAF's ageing Russian-made Pechora missiles.

India plans to build 18 command and launch systems for the new system.

"The missiles will have the capability of engaging multiple targets up to a range of 70 km. They will be part of a robust system to counter a wide variety of threats to ground assets and also serve as area defence," a source said.

The CCS's nod for collobrating with Israel in developing the missiles came in the wake of repeated delays in the DRDO's development of the indigenous Akash surface-to-air miss into the IAF by 2006, but the missile is still to undergo user trials.

Though the defence ministry did not give details of which of the missile to be developed in collaboration with Israel, reports have said that IAI is working on a medium range version of the Spyder-MR surface-to-air missile that has a range of over 55 km.

This is the second range of Israeli missiles that the IAF will be acquiring. Recently, India concluded a Rs 180 crore deal for acquiring 18 Spyder quick reaction surface-to -air missile systems for countering threats from low-flying aircraft.

The Spyder systems are being produced under licence at Hyderabad-based Bharat Dynamics limited.

Today's CCS meeting was also attended by Defence Minister A K Antony, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Finance Minister P Chidambaram and Home Minister Shivraj Patil. During the 65-minute meeting, the CCS also reviewed the security situation in South Asia.
