Air Force Updates Air Crew Medical Evaluation Standards

2007-08-05 Flying modern airplane require a high degree of physical and mental fitness to withstand the stresses that are placed on the aircrew. With the advent of more sophisticated high performance aircraft, the complexities facing the military aircrew have risen in geometrical progression.

In the booming civil aviation sector long haul flights and their associated problems with relation to mental alertness are also an area of concern. It is therefore imperative that medical evaluation of pilots be conducted so that the combat potential of the Armed Forces and the flying potential of the Civil Aviation industry is not depleted and at the same time flight safety is not compromised. Towards achieving this objective, AFCME (Air Force Central Medical Establishment) one of the premier medical institutions of IAF, has rendered yeoman service and is now virtually the custodian of medical safety in aviation for the country as a whole.

To further this goal and on the occasion of its Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, AFCME conducted a medical update on the “Current Trends in Aircrew Medical Evaluation” on 05 Aug 07. The update was inaugurated by the Air Chief Marshal FH Major PVSM, AVSM, SC, VM, ADC, Chief of the Air Staff and attended by a large number of eminent and renowned service and civil aviation delegates. The CAS in his inaugural address stressed on the need to integrate new capabilities, infuse innovations and to gear up medical evaluation in pursuit of enhanced flight safety, with no room for errors.

The scientific sessions dealt with various aspects of clinical aviation medicine. Some of the significant areas like the changing scenario in diabetes mellitus and evaluation of aircrew with coronary artery disease were deliberated upon with the aim to put the pilot back into the cockpit as early as possible. Recently a new policy has been introduced for civil pilots suffering from diabetes mellitus, who were made permanently unfit for flying duties, to be cleared on medication compatible with flying.

The Chief of the Air Staff also inaugurated a scientific exhibition portraying important medical products and equipment.

AFCME has always strived hard to attain its objectives of maintaining flight safety by adopting correct practices of aircrew medical evaluation. In the last 60 years, AFCME has fulfilled the objective of being the most disciplined and professional medical evaluation center.
