Israel has become in 2007 the world’s 4th largest arms exporter, mainly thanks to huge military contracts with India. Israel-Times India Bombay Delhi Bangalore Israel Defence Ministry announced Israel shipped out arms worth more than 4 billion dollars for 2007.
Nevertheless, Pinchas Bucharis, Israel Defence Ministry’s director general, insists that Israel exports are mainly concentrated on passive systems (radar systems, drones, surveillance) intended for defense and not attack, unlike the United States, Russia and France. And for the 5th year, Israel’s main defense client remains India.
India and Israel celebrated this year 15 years of peaceful and friendly cooperation in various sectors: agriculture, military, culture, biomedical, etc. Indian Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta is starting a 5-day visit to Israel for discussions on furthering the burgeoning military ties between the 2 countries. Tel Aviv emerged in the last few years as New Delhi’s 2nd largest arms supplier after Russia. From cautious beginnings in 1992 when the 2 countries resumed their diplomatic relations, India purchased from Israel $1.6 billion worth of weaponry in 2007.
