Indian Army Turns to Advanced War Simulation Systems

2008-11-21 With technology having assumed an important role in warfare, concerted efforts are on to equip the army with computer networks that can effectively perform even in the testing surroundings of a battleground. Keeping this objective in sight, the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering (MCTE) at Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, and the Indian Institute for Information Technology Allahabad (IIIT-A) have joined hands to develop "simulator tools".

"The aim is to design and develop a tool that would be able to simulate and evaluate the performance of different types of computer networks existing in the Indian Army," IIIT-A Director Mr M D Tiwari said. "During war, army deploys ad hoc networks and an effective tool is needed to help in its design and evaluation before it is actually deployed in the battlefield. While existing tools are not capable of doing this, our research is expected to overcome this handicap," he added.

He said the project, which is likely to continue for two years, will overcome the research challenges and help the army in the development of the network simulation tool that will be able to predict the performance of the existing and future networks of the army.

"The tool will allow analysis of existing networks. There will be a provision to incorporate new or customised network elements, protocols for evolution of the tool," he said. "A team of the MCTE, headed by Brigadier Narang, had recently visited our campus during which they explained to us the demands of an army computer network, which are much more rigorous than commercial and academic ones," he said.
