Kazakhstan, India to Finalize, Sign Nuclear Fuels Agreement

2009-01-15 Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, the Chief Guest for this year's Republic Day, will undertake a four-day visit here from January 23 during which the two countries are expected to sign a civil nuclear agreement and a few other pacts.

Nazarbayev, who will be accompanied by a large delegation, will hold talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Siongh and meet President Pratibha Patil and other leaders. He will be the first leader from Central Asia to be the Chief Guest at the Republic Day celebrations.

During the visit, the two sides are expected to sign a civil nuclear agreement besides a few other agreements. Kazakhstan is known to have the world's second largest reserves of uranium which India desperately needs to enable its atomic plants to continue running. Kazakhstan will be the fourth country after the US, France and Russia with which India will have civil nuclear cooperation.

Reflecting his country's keen interest to have civil nuclear agreement, Kazakh Ambassador Kairat Umarov had recently said "the Kazakh side is ready to cooperate with India because India's reputation is very high." Referring to the waiver by Nuclear Suppliers Group and firming up of India-IAEA safeguards agreement, he said "since all formal hurdles have been overcome, there is a clear road to cooperate." Umarov said supply of uranium would be one of the areas of cooperation.

Kazakhstan, which is the third largest producer of uranium, is planning to step up excavation to become the largest producer by 2010 by raising output to 15,500 tonnes, he said.
