Indian Army 2nd Dogra Battalion to Serve in Lebanon Peace Keeping Mission

2009-01-19 Lieutenant General SPS Dhillon, Deputy Chief of Army Staff (IS&T) addressed the contingent of 2 DOGRA INFANTRY BATTALION GROUP today here. The unit has been earmarked to represent the country in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

2 DOGRA, raised on 26 August 1858, is rated amongst the most decorated units of the Indian Army. Post Independence, this battle proven unit has distinguished itself in the 1948 J&K operations, the legendary battle of Operation HILL in 1971 Indo-Pak War and Siachen Glacier, the highest battlefield in the World. The unit also played a vital role in combating terrorism in Punjab for which it was awarded the Army Chiefs Unit Citation in 1992 and J&K in 2005-06.

The Deputy Chief of Army Staff (IS&T) while addressing the troops, mentioned the outstanding work being done by the Indian contingents in various United Nations Peace Keeping Operations in the past and expected the same from 2 DOGRA INFANTRY BATTALION GROUP. He stressed upon three core issues namely Naam, Namak and Nishan which should always be kept in mind and projected through the professional and personal conduct of all while on the UN Mission.

Rich Traditions

"The total collapse of the Pakistan Army's resistance is one of the most intriguing puzzles of the war in the East" wrote the Sunday Times on December 7, 1971 as Pakistan surrendered.

The credit for the fall of Suadih, a small village but a strong bastion of Pak army's most fortified position in Bangladesh, went to 9 Dogra. This led to the ultimate liberation of East Pakistan and the proud triumph of the Indian Army. For this herculean task, the battalion was awarded the battle honour of Suadih.
