India, Nigeria Sign MoU to Enhance Military Ties, Cooperation2009-01-20 India pledged Tuesday to assist Nigeria to raise its defence capabilities, while also seeking an accelerated implementation of the three Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) signed between the two countries in 2007. Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Mahesh Sachdev, made the pledge during a visit to Defence Minister Shettima Mustafa in the capital city of Abuja. He said in addition to providing training for the defence forces of Nigeria, "we want to make across the board presence in every sector of the Nigerian economy." He asked Dr Mustafa to avail India of the federal government's priorities in the area of defence, saying his nation was desirous of assisting Nigeria through its objectives. On the MOUs, which were signed during the visit of the Indian Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, to Nigeria, the High Commissioner said they included the one on defence cooperation. Mr Sachdev said India's wish was that the MOUs be "carried out to logical conclusion." The MOU on defence cooperation would see the Indian government establishing two IT laboratories in the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) and enhance cooperation between India and Nigeria in respect of UN peacekeeping operations. The Indian military played the leading role in the establishment of the NDA, with an Indian military officer being its first Commandant. In his response, Dr Mustafa praised the warm relations between Nigeria and India, saying India's assistance in the past had helped Nigeria in furthering its defence needs. Sponsored Links
