IAI Develops Arrow 3 Interceptor for Long Range Incoming Missiles

2009-06-13 Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) is developing an innovative Arrow 3 Missile, designed to intercept and destroy the future, longer range threats.

The interceptor integrates seamlessly into the Arrow Weapon System (AWS), complementing the current and future blocks of the Arrow 2, and enabling multiple engagement opportunities through its large kinematic envelope and short flight time. Recently, the U.S. government announced its plans to continue funding the Arrow Weapon System program, specifically the Arrow 3 System.

The Arrow 3 exoatmospheric interceptor includes a two stage interceptor based on hit-to-kill technology. Its compact design, outstanding maneuverability, and divert capability serve to enhance its effectiveness against all types of Theater Ballistic Missiles (TBMs) and warheads. The Arrow 3 also includes a state-of-the-art long range acquisition high resolution EO sensor and has a low life cycle cost (LCC).

Uri Sinai, General Manager of IAI's MLM Division, said: "We are very proud of this new and innovative solution in the framework of Israeli missile defense architecture. With the new Arrow 3 and the latest blocks of Arrow 2, the Arrow Weapon System becomes the world's first multi-tier unified missile defense system designed to reach a near zero leakage rate."

In addition, the Arrow II System, recently tested by the Israel Air Force with great success, is undergoing several upgrades and advancements. The system includes Network Centric Warfare technology, a more advanced Arrow 2 interceptor, and the Super Green Pine radar. The Super Green Pine radar, an updated version of the Green Pine radar, is long-range and is composed of smaller radars with better capabilities than those of the Green Pine.
