Boeing, Terma Tie Up to Implement Active Noise Reduction For F/A-18 Super Hornets

2009-06-20 Boeing and Terma today agreed to conduct a feasibility study for implementation and integration of Terma's 3D-Audio and Active Noise Reduction (ANR) technology on Boeing's F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

The 3D-Audio and ANR feasibility study is the second project to be implemented under the cooperation agreement signed in Copenhagen in March this year in connection with Boeing's bid for Denmark's New Combat Aircraft.

"With the wide range of aircraft platforms, Boeing is an extremely attractive partner for Terma," said Steen Lynenskjold, Senior VP of Terma's Airborne Systems Business Area. "We are cooperating on a number of projects, and with this feasibility study on 3D-Audio, we are developing our business further to the benefit of both companies."

Previously, Boeing selected Terma's Electronic Warfare Management System (EWMS) suite as a preferred advanced electronic warfare solution for a number of CH-47F Chinook helicopter offerings to international customers whose requirements extend beyond Boeing's baseline CH-47F offering.

"The Super Hornet continues to evolve with the latest technology to meet tomorrow's threat," said Bob Gower, Vice President of F/A-18 Programs for Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. Incorporation of Terma's 3D-Audio system into the Super Hornet is another example of the growth capability of the aircraft and part of our technology roadmap to continuously improve and upgrade the Super Hornet."

Terma's 3D-Audio system is the world's first operative directional audio system. It uses directional sound to warn the pilot against missile attack. Thereby, the pilot obtains rapid identification of the threat direction. This minimizes reaction time and provides the pilot with an improved possibility for initiating countermeasures. Simultaneously, the system reduces the noise level which improves the working conditions in the aircraft.

The Royal Danish Air Force has approved the system following extensive test flights, and Terma secured a contract for installation of 3D-Audio and ANR in all of the Danish MLU (Mid-Life Update) F-16s which are part of the M5 update from 2009 and on. Boeing and Terma have a year-long history of strong cooperation including electronic components and harnesses for the NATO AWACS and EWMS for the P-8A, the U.S. Navy's new maritime patrol aircraft.
