RAW Chief's tenure extended for two years2005-10-03 Days after the Union Cabinet cleared the two-year fixed tenure for four key bureaucratic posts, the Centre has extended the service of RAW Chief P K Hormese Tharakan for an identical period.Tharakan, a 1968 batch IPS officer of Kerala cadre, joined as RAW Chief on January 31 this year. A Government communique said: "The competent authority has cleared the name of P K H Tharakan for the post of Secretary (R) till January 31, 2007 or until further orders, which ever come first." The appointment of Tharakan, who came to RAW while he was serving as Director General of Kerala Police, had raised several eyebrows as he had superceded J K Sinha, an RAS officer of 1967 batch, who eventually resigned in protest. Thakaran, who had served in RAW for over a decade with important stints in Europe and Nepal, was to retire in June earlier this year but had been given an extension till September 30. Tharakan took over as the head of external intelligence agency when it was attracting adverse attention after one of its senior officials Rabindra Singh fled to the United States after passing sensitive information to CIA. His continuation was signal that the Government was laying special emphasis on its task of overhauling the RAW which included strengthening of its counter-intelligence system. The Union cabinet had cleared on September 22, a fixed tenure for RAW Chief, IB Chief, Home Secretary and Defence Secretary citing "operational needs." Sponsored Links
