Earthquake will not affect Indra-2005: Ivanov

2005-10-09 Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov has said that the devastating earthquake which hit India, will not affect the scheduled plans for "Indra-2005" joint anti-terror wargames to be held in India from October 10 to 20.

The earthquake will not change the schedule of the "Indra-2005" Russian-Indian joint military exercises. "The quake was centered far from the area of the joint manoeuvers," Interfax news agency quoted Mr Ivanov as saying.

Referring to the great loss of lives and damage to property, Mr Ivanov said Russia was prepared to help the quake-hit areas in India and Pakistan.

"The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry is ready to dispatch rescue teams and equipment to clear away rubble and deal with other consequences of the disaster. The Defence Ministry can also place cargo planes at the disposal of two countries," Mr Ivanov said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday sent a telegram to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, expressing sympathy and condolences over the devastating consequences of the earthquake.

"I was deeply upset by the reports on tragic aftermath of the powerful earthquake that took away numerous human lives in the state of Jammu and Kashmir," Mr Putin said.

"Please convey my condolences to the families and friends of the dead and the expressions of deep sympathy for all those affected by the calamity," Mr Putin said.

The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry would send help to earthquake-hit Pakistan, Viktor Beltsov, a minstry spokesman said.

An Il-76 aircraft with 30 rescuers and equipment onboard will fly to Islamabad today afternoon.
